DESCRIPTION: A set sequence of postures, practiced in the same order every time, with every movement tied to the breath. Developed by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois in the 20th century, it builds through six progressive series, and most students spend a long stretch, sometimes years, in the Primary Series, which lays down the strength, flexibility, and focus the later series ask for. Our classes are led, meaning the teacher calls out the postures and breath counts and the room moves through the sequence together. The sessions weave in the teachings of Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras alongside the practice, bringing in the philosophy and the eight-limbed path behind the poses. It’s a demanding practice, and that’s the point. Coming back to the same sequence day after day is where the real work happens.
