Yogic Meditation : From Dharana (Concentration) into Dhyana (Meditation)
(offered once a month building up from the basics)
Different to Vedantic or Buddhist meditation, yogic meditation contains the same structural elements as yogic postures and breathing and was designed to form together with those an integrated whole. Meditation is the method of bringing your mind into a receptive state so that you can receive higher knowledge that is already there. Yogic meditation is a collection of scientific methods to bring about such awareness. To accelerate spiritual evolution yogic meditation employs many means amongst which the prime ones are mantra, mudra, bandha, chakra-visualization and Kundalini-raising techniques. The yogic chakras are representations of evolutionary brain circuitry with the lower three chakras representing our reptilian, mammalian and primate ancestry respectively. By understanding the chakras and skillfully meditating on them yoga offers the opportunity to activate higher brain centres and propel the evolution not only of the individual but of society as a whole. Kundalini-raising techniques consist of a combination of all other yogic means to raise the life force (prana) to a level where meditation is easy and spiritual insight becomes spontaneous.
My back ground with a sitting meditation practice:
My parents were the care givers of the Vancouver Sufi house since we moved to Canada. I was raised since childhood in that environment, but nothing was imposed on me. I would sometimes sit with adults during their sessions without knowing any techinique or what they were really doing. However at age 22 I wished to become a disciple of Sufi Master Javad Nurbakhsh a living master of the Nimatollahi Sufi Order and I was accepted by his grace. I was privileged to have met this extraordinary person in person as a child and had his guidance and of his chosen Sheikhs on the path os Sufism which is parallel to the path of Yoga but with a great emphasis on Bhakti & Karma Yoga.
I have had a regular sitting practice (Zekr) since then. It has accompanied me through several phases and ups and downs of life. It was not until 3 years ago that I was introduced to this specific method of Yogic meditation technique that I will be teaching by the great teacher Gregor Maehle. Since then I have done several courses and the teacher trainings with him. Last course I did with him was a 50h training in Italy in September, and the advance training will be taking place in 2023.
I found the yogic meditation quite different to other meditation methods I have practiced or known in a way that it is a really strong concentration exercise allowing me to go into a deep meditative state. Another major difference I have experienced was that through this practice I have been able to better balance my chakras, their characteristics and relations to our bio-psychological and mental state. This method has been quite effective and transformative that is why I'm very motivated and eager to share it with other practitioners so that you can also benefit from it.
Hope to see you next Saturday,
