DESCRIPTION: The ancient practice of nidra traces to the Sankhya philosophy of India, which saw reality based in two essential principals, consciousness and cognition. Similar to meditation, nidra, which translates to "sleep," is actually an awakened state beyond dreaming, what scientists call the Delta state of consciousness. Brainwaves in the Delta state are high amplitude at a slow frequency, when the mind is in what the lay person would identify as "deep, dreamless sleep."
Nidra benefits the autonomic nervous system, which regulates the unconscious (automatic) processes of the body -- both the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems -- including stress response, sleep cycle, and digestion.
