DESCRIPTION: What are the 8 Limbs of Yoga? Yama, Niyama, Asana, Pranayama, Pratyahara, Dharana, Dhyana, & Samadhi.

Though it is often the first step most Westerners take on their road to a yoga practice, Asana is the third limb of the 8-limbed path of yoga. The postures of yoga we are familiar with in a studio culture are the access point to the five senses, acquiring the tools necessary to build and hone our physical awareness, and gaining perspective on more and more subtle sensations. In Classical Yoga, Asana accesses Tapas and burns through karma. In this class, we'll consider Asana practice as a bridge between the somatic and the esoteric. We'll explore classical philosophies, but also examine the reality of our physical form in its anatomy and physiology, and how that impacts the nature of our movement on the mat.
