Daphne @Syzygy
Daphne embarked on her Ashtanga yoga journey in Asia in 2006 under the guidance of Alexander Medin in Hong Kong & Bella Lipat in the Philippines. She initially trained to teach the Sivananda traditions whilst opening up a first-of-it’s-kind yoga studio in her hometown with her business partner. Daphne became sufficiently inspired by the positive effects of her practice as a yoga instructor and her own personal yoga inquisition to undertake her first formal yoga training in India in 2009. She then expanded her ancient practice modality in Thailand, conducting a Traditional Thai Massage Therapy course in Women’s Healthcare before her big move to the UK in 2010. On her move to London, Daphne retained her yogic journey in the traditional yoga lineage, attending asana classes, pranayama and kirtans at Satyananda Yoga Center and Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Center whilst continuing with her on-going Ashtanga practice and study, taking specialist Teacher Training courses and workshops under the Ashtanga vinyasa method.
Daphne extends gratitude to all her teachers past and present, and continues to study in her favoured areas of interest to add depth to her knowledge for her own internal nourishment and to share it with other practitioners.
Description
Ashtanga Yoga led class every Monday going through most of the first series in an hour practice, covering the fundamentals & essential elements entering into the primary series.
The class will begin with the Surya Namaskar A & B (Sun salutations) in sanskrit counting, followed by set of standing postures. We will touch on few seated postures and inversion poses in the finishing sequence. We will aim to end the class with a quick Savasana, to end this modified practice of Ashtanga primary series, as a means of relaxing and integrating the body & mind fully conscious for total relaxation.
Beginner practitioners who are familiar to the sequence or new to the style, you can start at anytime. Each poses will be introduced with all its sanskrit names & its closest English translation. There will a modified variation for each poses for beginners flexibility, with a goal to execute the full pose when more strength and advance flexibility is achieved. Guide sheet will be provided to assist self practice at home for those coming in consistently for a weekly in-person practice.
The Ashtanga sequence works every part of the body, building strength, flexibility and balance as well as cardiovascular strength. It requires focus and creates rhythm to our breath and movement which gives space to check-in with the body and mind.
Bring your yoga mat, (2 yoga blocks & a yoga strap to help with flexibility, if you have but not necessary). Lastly drink lots of water before coming to the class and it would be advisable not to eat in the hour running up to the practice.
