Akiwele Burayidi is a RYT-200 who was first introduced to yoga by her mother. Akiwele has always been fascinated by bodies in motion. When she began taking dance lessons at the age of four, this fascination soon became a passion. By the age of ten, she took classes several days a week to train in classical ballet and contemporary dance. During this time, Akiwele used yoga to keep her body safe and find moments of stillness. As she grew older she began to delve further into the history and theory of yoga. This curiosity led her to enroll in the RajaHatha School of Yoga teacher training. In February of 2021, she graduated as a 200-hour certified yoga teacher under the direction of Amy Pearce-Hayden. Now a fourth-year student at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, she is pursuing degrees in Health Promotion & Health Equity and Dance. She hopes to share her passion for movement with people by creating safe, accessible, and inclusive spaces to connect with the breath and explore gentle movement.
