About Afrodisia Yoga
Welcome to AFRODISIA, a revolution of soulful love, ancestral healing and inner joy!
AFRODISIA unites Vinyasa yoga, Egyptian yoga (Smai Tawi), and dances from Africa and the Caribbean for a rhythmic yoga flow.
Soulful, easy-to-follow afro mechanics blend into creative yoga sequences that integrate aboriginal movement, balancing, and body conditioning for all yoga and fitness levels.
Afrodisia helps to clear mental and emotional stress stored in the body, sparking an inner revolution that illuminates the path towards a more holistic lifestyle off the mat. Afrodisia is an ancestral remix of:
- yoga asana (postures)
- Afro movement connected to natural cycles, rhythms, and elements
- breathwork (chi, prana, ka)
Stimulate your body’s natural flow of energy and awaken the senses as you flow across the Diaspora to the sounds of Afro Pop, Reggae, Dancehall, Afro Cuban, Dembow, Brazilian Funk, drumming, and other Afrocentric rhythms!
Whether you’re looking for a spark of transformation, ancestral connection, or want to improve your overall health you’ll connect on a deeper, more intrinsic level with the roots of your innermost self through this movement based practice that both challenges and empowers you.
We offer four signature formats for all bodies and levels of wellness:
- ALIGNED, our beginner-friendly foundational flow.
- FLOW THE CULTURE, an open level, up-tempo class where yoga meets Afro Dance styles and calisthenics for a powerful, liberating flow.
- BURN SLOW, our restorative yoga and meditation offering.
- FLEX, a HIIT-based class where calisthenics meets dances of the Diaspora.
ABOUT AFRODISIA:
Derived from the words Aphrodisia - the ancient Grecian festival of love and beauty inspired by the Egyptian goddesses Hathor and Isis - and Afro, related to African and Diaspora peoples and cultures.
Afrodisia is a rhythmic, celebratory journey inward that inspires self-love, healing, and ancestral-cultural connection through movements originating from African cultures.
ABOUT YOGA:
Recent archaeological excavations and the science of human migration also show the foundations of yoga are to be found in Egypt near the year 1500 B.C. - at least 1300 years before the Indian yogi Patanjali, and related to King Tut.
This practice honors the Kemetic (Egyptian, African) origins of yoga as well as the Vedic lineages that were developed afterward. We honor modern developments in the science of movement, maintaining physical safety through proper alignment. We encourage practitioners to find ways into each posture that works for their own body’s needs, which is informed by individual progress and ability in the present moment. We honor each person's needs while also challenging the notions each one may carry within in order to uncover the truest self.
YOGA/SMAI TAWI is a holistic practice that involves upgrading one’s lifestyle beyond the physical movements we commonly see touted as yoga. Here, we honor the totality of this metaphysical science.
This practice was created by Shari Cheverez, a movement artist, scholar, and healer of African American, Cherokee, and Puerto Rican/Taino heritage.
