About Lisa
I’m Lisa, founder of Gower Postural Therapy and Gower Pilates, and my work is centred around helping people understand their bodies, move with greater confidence and feel stronger and more comfortable in everyday life.
I’ve been teaching Pilates since 2017 and am Comprehensively Trained with BASI Pilates, completing my training in Colorado and California. That training, together with my experience in postural therapy, manual therapy and sports therapy, has shaped the way I teach and the way I look at movement.
For me, Pilates is about much more than simply following a series of exercises. I want you to understand your body — how you move, where you compensate, where you hold tension and how seemingly small changes can make movement feel completely different.
A big part of my work is my interest in and hands on experience with fascia. Rather than looking at muscles and joints in isolation, I consider the body as an interconnected whole. I work with fascial lines and force distribution relationships throughout the body, recognising that restriction or tension in one area can influence movement somewhere else.
This also feeds into the concept of tensegrity, the idea of looking at the body as an interconnected system in which tension, compression and load are distributed across the whole structure. I bring that way of thinking into my Pilates teaching. Instead of focusing solely on one muscle or one joint, we look at how the whole body organises itself during movement.
That might mean considering how the feet and legs influence the pelvis, how the ribcage and breathing affect the spine, or how the shoulders, trunk and hips work together rather than treating each area separately.
My background in manual therapy, sports therapy, postural work and fascial work also means I spend a lot of time working hands on with different bodies. I see people with stiffness, restricted movement, muscular tension and the effects of work, sport, injury and everyday life. That experience comes into the studio with me and influences how I observe movement and adapt exercises to the individual in front of me.
My Pilates classes therefore have a strong focus on alignment, breathing, strength, mobility, control and body awareness, but without losing sight of the person as a whole.
Whether you’re completely new to Pilates, returning after a break or have practised for years, I want you to come away with more than a good workout in every class. I want you to connect deeper, understand your body better, recognise what good movement feels like for you and develop the strength and mobility that supports you in life outside the studio.
Pilates with purpose. Understanding the whole body, not just the exercise.
