Finding compassion: Restorative Yoga and Metta Bhavana Meditation

This special class is organized around a shared value of yoga and buddhism: compassion. In the first half of the class, Carrie Ann will guide the group in a ~50-minute session of restorative yoga where we will move through poses that help us connect with the heart chakra just as it is. In the second half, Mirela will lead a ~30 minute Metta Bhavana Meditation that will deepen the feeling of loving kindness for ourself and others. We will close with a short talk about the meaning of compassion in our two traditions and their overlap.

This disciplined practice covers the half Ashtanga Primary Series, a dynamic, fast-paced series of sequential postures transmitted by yoga master Sri K. Pattabhi Jois. Each pose is linked to the next through a series of connecting movements called vinyasa, allowing the body to create heat and leading to more flexibility. Smooth, deep breathing (ujjayi) is synchronized with the movements. This powerful and vigorous practice purifies and realigns the body, cultivating a feeling of inner peace, and leading to a natural state of meditation.
