Ashtanga Mysore style is a self-paced practice with personal guidance from the teacher.
Unlike a class where everyone follows the same postures at the same time, Mysore style works as follows:
Build up slowly: Mysore style beginners start the practice with learning sun salutation A & B with guidance from teacher, and repeat the sun salutations at your own pace. So you can go home after 1 hour of practice for instance.
One pose at a time: Your practice will be shorter than people who have practiced Mysore for a long time and gradually become longer as the teacher sees proper for your condition, you will be guided to learn a new pose at a time. Therefore you will finish your practice earlier or later than your classmate depending on your own pace.
Personal assistance: The teacher offers individual guidance, assist and adjusts postures where needed.
Embody the practice: You gradually learn the sequence of postures by heart, step by step.
Quiet practice: The atmosphere is calm and focused – like a moving meditation where you can repeat or pause to absorb the practice or re-energize quietly at your own pace. It is suitable for all levels.
