Yin Yoga is style of yoga where poses are held for an extended period of time usually 3-10 minutes. In what can be called "Yang Yoga" (any type of Hatha, Vinyasa etc) we try to warm the body up to stretch and strengthen the muscles. In Yin Yoga we do the opposite, by staying in the poses for several minutes the body and muscles remain cool. This gives us an opportunity to stretch and strengthen the ligaments and joints. It works deeply on the connective tissues (the fascia) which can give a strong sensation of length and stretch in the body. Unlike in restorative yoga, there can sometimes be a sense of discomfort (we never want pain in yoga) and that's where we get an excellent opportunity to train our mind in how to relax. This training turns our awareness inwards and quite quickly we feel empowered by being in control over how we react, feel and breathe.
Stimulates the meridians (energy channels) which brings balance to the organs in the body
Improves flexibility and joint mobility
Calms and balances the mind and body
Reduces stress and anxiety
Works deeply on the connective tissues (fascia, tendons and ligaments)
Can prepare the practitioner for meditation practice
Vinyasa flow is a typical Yang practice, this particular course will have a strong focus on the breath and moving with ease. Creating a fluid, flowing movement where there are no end postures or goals, just moving the body. There will be sun salutation, heating of the body and a well designed balanced between strengthening and increasing flexibility in both the body and the mind. Vinyasa in itself is a very creative form of movement as the main cue is the breath; does it feel good to breathe here, great, do more of that, what if we change this bit, better? if not go back to the original movement. Expressing ourselves in this creative movement is a great way to increase passion within us which fuels our internal fire.
Strengthens and tones the body
Improves flexibility and circulation
Increases stamina
Calms the mind down by inviting us to synchronize movement with breath
Removes tension and obstacles in the body to allow breath and prana to flow
These two styles go to together very nicely and balance each other in a very benefiting way.
I am sure you can see how too much fiery movement can burn us out, and too much cooling stillness can leave us feeling stagnated and stuck. The two together? Perfect balance.
These two practices also balance the lives we tend to live at the moment. Most of us have a lot to do at work, at home and on our free time, this is where the yin practice is needed to calm the mind. At the same time most of us spend a lot of time with our body in the same place, this is where the vinyasa will help us get going. Vinyasa yoga is also very helpful if you have ever used the expression "running around like a headless chicken" about yourself and your errands as the deliberate movement allow us to feel centered and connected to all our body parts, making it easier to feel like we are in control!
