Description
Pranayama (breathing exercises) to end the class. It will be sweet!
Equanimity in the burning fire. Ashtanga is a strong and meditative practice filled with mystery and 'aha' moments. This practice has unknown origins (no one knows where the sequence first appeared) and a long history of curious and disputed principles. Originally, the sequence was exclusively taught to young Brahmin boys (in India, a Brahmin is a person of the highest class, spiritually and socially, e.g., sons of teachers and priests). So it was designed for the young and flexible. Fortunately, things have changed in today's world.
In the 60s, 70s and 80s, Ashtanga found its peak, with many Westerners travelling to India to practice for months with Sri K. Pattabhi Jois. Lots of them then started teaching in the West (some were 14 when they first started teaching!).
Today, still, Ashtanga is somewhat a feared practice by many, due to its solid and robust approach, its 'fixed' sequence, and poses that require a certain degree of strength and flexibility (yes, some poses look like them people don't have any bones at all!). Spoiler alert: the sequence doesn't have to be that fixed.
Injuries and strong physical adjustments used to be the norm. Not anymore. At least, not at ALTAR. We believe Ashtanga is a deeply powerful AND softening practice. A practice that can bring a trance-like state, where time stops, the mind becomes fixed on the present moment, and through which higher states of consciousness can be reached.
Ashtanga is a practice that can be adapted to suit everyone's uniqueness. No two people are the same, so, there's no way a pose should be exactly the same for everyone.
We believe in working with the energy of each individual, facilitating their own journey, in their own way, rather than pushing people into things. Our focus is on finding the magic, developing focus, physical and mental strength, and taking the practice higher. Always remembering that yoga is, before anything else, a spiritual practice.
For now, all classes will be open level. The teachers adapt the difficulty of the classes based on the students and offer options for everyone, regardless of their experience with yoga (if you are a beginner, please do not panic, we promise you'll be fine).
Taught in English.
IMPORTANT: we encourage you to bring your own mat (or you can rent a premium Lululemon / Alo 5mm mat in the studio for 18 RON / class - limited number available, so please book in advance via DM on Instagram or email at andrei.virtejanu@gmail.com)
