India Drew
India Drew has 20 years of meditation experience from different traditions, having trained in vipassana meditation, Zen meditation, metta meditation and insight dialogue. Her practice is grounded in experiential learning from numerous 10-day vipassana and metta retreats, a month-long residential retreat and many shorter retreats. She has explored various techniques including observation of breath, loving kindness, compassion, noting/labeling, breath counting and open awareness; and she hopes to share what she has learned and found most useful. She honors the opportunity to assist beginners first exploring meditation, and to provide a safe space for all to experience the dynamic of mindfulness through interpersonal sharing.

Description

Weekly donation-based offering of a shared meditative environment and instructional class for anyone seeking enhanced peace and contentment in their life. Whatever your age, faith background or personal beliefs, anyone can learn to cultivate tranquility and mindfulness through meditation. The benefits to our mental and physical health are confirmed by research – increased attention span, reduced stress, better sleep, greater self awareness and insight. This class provides foundational instruction in focused awareness meditation. Beginners and experienced meditators welcome.

The class will begin with meditation instruction and seated meditation, followed by walking meditation, a short reading and discussion. The seated meditation will be guided at first to assist in settling the mind. The guidance will taper off, giving way to silence and the opportunity for independent practice. This class aims to provide the foundation needed to establish a silent, unguided meditation practice.

Seated meditation may be performed sitting on the ground or in a chair. The teacher will assist with finding a supportive, comfortable position for the body, using whatever props and aids necessary. Chairs, bolsters and blankets are available for use. Feel free to bring your own cushions.
