Description
Mindfulness Course: Relax and Reconnect || 12 March - 2 April (4 sessions) ||Tuesdays 8:15-9:15 pm

This course will introduce you to practices that help to quiet mental chatter by consciously shifting our attention to the body, breath, and eventually, our own inner silence. Across the span of 4 weeks, we will learn to combine breathwork, meditation, yin yoga, and yoga nidra as well as introduce some of the theory behind it so that you leave the course with a greater capacity for mindfulness and presence.

Week 1 – Matter over mind: Stress and the breath
You’re stressed? Just take a deep breath, right? This is popular advice, but when in a state of high stress, we often need to move first and then turn to the breath. In this session, we will learn exercises for getting yourself safely back into the body and then move on to breathing techniques. You will learn why nose breathing is best and tips for avoiding hyperventilation.

Week 2 – Alternative kind of asana: Yin yoga
Stillness can often be more challenging than movement. Yin yoga, a style of asana practice where we hold poses for minutes at a time, teaches us this. In this session, we will learn to relax into stillness and acceptance through a yin yoga practice focused on the liver and lung meridians. These meridians help us work through feelings of anger and grief.

Week 3 – Relaxing into rest: Yoga Nidra
A loud mind and a busy life often disrupt our body’s innate ability to rest and recover. Whether you have trouble sleeping or just don’t have enough time for proper rest, yoga nidra can help the body recover in much the way sleep does. In this session, we will do a long yoga nidra practice followed by a discussion of the benefits of this practice (which you will have experienced first hand).

Week 4 – Focusing the mind: Meditation
In the midst of our busy lives, many of us find our mind distracted. Meditation can help us to regain concentration in the midst of mental chatter. In this session, we will work on focusing the mind through different meditation practices that work on developing ‘one-pointed’ concentration.
