Energizing Practice with Krama (2/19/26)
Allison MillerFebruary 19 2026 • Duration: 56 Minutes
This class begins with about 12 minutes of group discussion about our topic for the month of February, Karuna/Compassion.
The practice is energizing, using a 3-part "krama" inhale. Krama means"gradual progression, unfolding" and/or to "move step-by-step." The gentle layering of the segments of the breath, and the segmented movement of the arms can increase our interoceptive awareness - or our mind/body awareness. This is a subtle tool for creating greater connection within ourselves, enhancing the wisdom within.
The poses we practice are gentle and the transitions are not too tough - so a great gentle moving class - but the breath might be considered a bit "advanced" so take it easy if you're new to this type of breathing.
I review these two quotes as a part of our discussion:
• Dr. Shauna Shapiro, a neuroscientist and professor at Santa Clara University: she is best known for the phrase... “What you practice grows stronger” meaning that if you practice self-judgment, you’ll get better at it, but if you practice self- compassion, you’ll become adept at that instead. (Subtle Yoga with Kristine Weber)
• Dr. Paul Gilbert, a British psychologist, suggests that human brains evolved for survival, not necessarily happiness, and so we tend towards vigilance and criticism rather than compassion. Consciously cultivating compassion helps regulate emotions. (Subtle Yoga with Kristine Weber)
